For Rabbi Bob Alper, publishing books is a way to extend the joy he spreads one giggle at a time

This fun post greeted fans of standup comic Rabbi Bob Alper in their inboxes, this week, as he announced that he is in the midst of booking his 2025-26 season. The photo is from a show he performed in Springfield, Massachusetts. Bob also told fans that he has just finished “headlining at the nationally renown Borscht Belt Fest and has performed with Lewis Black, Elon Gold, Susie Essman, Mal Z Lawrence, Mo Amer, Judy Gold, Dick Capri and Freddie Roman.” Want to get in touch with him? He’s easy to find online at https://www.bobalper.com/

But, wait a minute! Don’t leave yet …

You’ve just gotta see this video!

We’ve got the video below—but, before that, let me explain why we’re continuing to cheer on Bob’s efforts after so many years.

Authors have many reasons to write and publish books—and our most successful authors truly take to heart the way good books make the world a little better. Of course, we’ve said that so many times over the past two decades that regular readers of this column may roll their eyes at the naïveté of that goal. But Bob so clearly embodies it, year after year, that I found myself laughing out loud at the 9-minute YouTube compilation he sent along with the latest news about his bookings.

This guy’s warm heart—and his fun way of seeing our world—just makes you want to give an old friend a warm hug.

And, one reason he’s so fun to watch is: Bob knows exactly what he’s doing each step of the way—each word he delivers and each time he pauses dramatically before delivering the comic coup de gras.

This guy in his late 70s just loves to make people laugh—because he knows they’ll feel better and our troubled world certainly needs more good and hopeful humor. In fact, Bob told us years ago that he wanted to publish two of his books with us—because he sells them after his shows as a way for his audience to spend a little more time absorbing his message. They buy a book; they wait in line to have him sign their copy—and they go home not only talking about the good time they just had at his standup performance, but also able to extend that feeling through the enjoyment of his books.

“I’m not doing these books because I need the money. I’m not doing this because I expect to be a famous best-selling author. I’m doing this because the stories in these books have a lot of practical wisdom and a lot of good humor in them—and we all need that, don’t week? It’s a mitzvah to put these books out into the world,” Bob told me a dozen years ago as we got ready to publish the 2013 book, Thanks. I Needed That. and then, exactly one decade ago, Life Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This.

Bob is living, breathing proof that our founding principle—”Good media builds healthy community”—has a real and abiding value in our world.

So, if you’re tired of reading about that benevolent mission—why not jump right to the laughter!?

This video clip is 9 minutes you’ll be glad you spent with Bob!
